Music for toilets

As the latest feat of her residency, Louise van den Heuvel delivers a beautiful dash of music - for our toilets. Come listen to Water Works' tracks during your next restroom visit, good for a gurgling musical pee break!

Whence the inspiration, Louise?

'The bad weather in Belgium, haha! I love the idea of writing or improvising music to an image I have in my head. Rural and natural scenes fascinate me the most.

When composing, I was asked to create a cycle. I thought of some natural cycles, including that of rain. This appealed to me the most, because the sound of rain or the sound of running water can normally help with urination.

On the other hand, I wanted to make music that was not too overtly and explicitly the sound of water. It could remain a bit abstract and mysterious.'

Running through the tracks

  • Cumulus  Formation of cauliflower clouds in broad daylight with a trickle of rain here and there.
  • Altostratus Light precipitation to increasingly heavy precipitation. Warm air slides over cold air in even gray cloud cover.
  • Convection The sudden rise of warm air. There can only be thunderstorms on the way.
  • Cumulonimbus (Rivier) The different pressures cause friction. It is lightning.
  • Heavy Showers  The rain of the cracked thundercloud. The water finds its way from the river to the sea.
  • The Soil The water absorbed by the soil (and not run off to the sea) provides the food for the plants on land. They can grow.
  • Drought A period of drought is upon us. The sun dries out all the vegetation, which is now harder to grow. Slowly but surely you can hear the sea swaying in the background and the wind blows yet another cloud in our direction that brings us back to the top of the cycle.
